Planning for the Implementation of RTI

The National Center on Response to Intervention hosted a webinar on September 23 on “Planning for the Implementation of RTI: Examples from the MP3 Model Demonstration Project.” This webinar provided state educational agencies with a description of the process the Monitoring the Progress of Pennsylvania’s Pupils (MP3) project used to diagnose schools’ readiness to implement RTI and assess their professional development needs. In addition, this webinar discussed the professional development provided by MP3 to the schools and described the project’s initial findings. You can view the presentation and recording. Edward S. Shapiro, Ph.D., the Director of Lehigh (PA) University’s Center for Promoting Research to Practice, presented this webinar. Lehigh University is a partner with the National Center on Response to Intervention. Dr. Shapiro’s work focuses on outcomes of Response to Intervention models for service delivery and assessment and intervention for academic skills problems. Dr. Shapiro is co-principal investigator of the Model Demonstration Project (MP3), which is a joint partnership between Lehigh University, University of Pittsburgh, and the Pennsylvania Training & Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

Establish a need for change
Establish an RTI Leadership Team
Provide training in terminology of RTI for all staff that will be involved (superintendent, principal, coordinators, teachers, paraprofessionals)
Determine the method of screening all students (what assessment, how often, who will administer, what will it indicate)
Clarify the Tier I instructional program
Determine who will provide the tiered interventions (Tier II and III) and who will complete and record progress monitoring
Provide training in assessment and intervention methods
Begin
Establish regular meetings of the RTI Team to determine next steps, support, student selection, interventions etc.
Provide ongoing training for classroom and intervention teachers
Make decisions and changes as you go…there is no right or wrong way as long as it is providing you with information and successful students
Determine the indicators that will determine a Special Education placement
