FIEP Delivery Options

FIEP Coaching-- (1 day)

These are follow-up up workshops with LEA participants to address issues and challenges experienced during of implementation of the FIEP model. Discussions and recommendations by consultants and participants will comprise much of the day. Additionally, a sharing of successfully employed strategies will take place to expand participants’ toolbox of skills, culminating with the development of a district/individual plan of action.

Participants will leave with:



  1. An expanded set of skills to deal with the planned, the known and the unexpected ,

  2. An increased comfort level with the facilitation process and components,

  3. An increased application of skills into daily work with teams,

  4. Stronger collaboration and networking with other participants which result in an empowered team

  5. Increased skills in self-assessment of facilitation, which is a key part of an ongoing self-improvement.

FIEP Overview-- (1 day)

The overview of FIEP is provided to district staff where FIEP training has already taken place. It will give a general understanding of the FIEP components to those likely to participate in IEP meetings. It does not certify participants to facilitate IEP meetings, but will prepare them to take a more active role in the process. When participating in IEPs run by a trained facilitator, participants will be a part of and contribute to:



  1. Increased number of conflict-free meetings

  2. Meetings where all participants are prepared and focused on the outcomes

  3. Shorter time spent in meetings and more time for instruction

  4. Fewer escalations to other levels of review (needing another meeting to bringing in higher levels of administrative staff or cases of mediation, resolution and due process)

  5. Meetings totally focused on student needs

  6. Open communication and reflective listening resulting in increased respect of opinions for all IEP team members

  7. Collaborative decision making

  8. Consensus building on reaching agreements

  9. Accomplished meeting goals

Enhanced Interpersonal Skills Training - (2 days)

This training will focus on enhancing interpersonal skills to enable key district staff to facilitate those IEP meetings where the greatest possibility exists for an emotional, contentious or litigious meeting. Participants will have taken the FIEP training and have facilitated a large number of IEP meetings. Training will include 1) a core set of activities with 2) a focus on those areas identified by the district and participants with 3) a major component and theme on dealing effectively with those participants whose personal needs often outweigh the needs of the child. Participants will have a greater and deeper interpersonal skill set to deal more effectively with any individual or group.

Participants will leave with:



  1. A deeper level of skills in the interaction method as an alternative way to guide meetings

  2. Enhanced interpersonal skills and strategies for interacting with disruptive or misdirected members of an IEP meeting and other formal and informal meetings.

  3. An expanded repertoire of conflict resolution strategies

  4. A deeper understanding of when to "deal with" and when to "defer."

  5. Expanded skills based on district and individually assessed needs.

  6. A greater skill set for interacting with those whose personal needs outweigh the child’s or the purpose of the meeting
