Goals and Objectives
Writing Goals, Objectives and Benchmarks: Data Based, Student Focused and Aligned with Standards- (2 days)
Training on the writing of goals and objectives will include use of data, identifying useful data to make appropriate decisions for determining the present levels of academic achievement and functional performance to write goals, objectives and benchmarks that are measurable and can be implemented in the classroom. Attention will also be given to aligning the goals and objectives with the general education curriculum and state standards and for making the numerous other decisions that are based on the goals and objectives (i.e., selection of the appropriate state assessment, diploma eligibility, transportation, accommodations, services, placement etc.).
Participants will learn how to:
- Develop state and federally compliant goals, objectives and benchmarks
- Employ collaborative techniques to establish and define the child’s present levels of performance (strengths and challenges) and, from those, develop measurable goals objectives and benchmarks
- Determine present levels of educational performance using formal and informal data, including data collected in the RtI process
- Use present levels of educational performance data to write measurable student focused goals
- Use state standards and the general educations curriculum in writing goals, objectives and benchmarks that addresses instruction in the general curriculum
- Develop measurable objectives that incrementally define achievement.
- Write goals, objectives and benchmarks that can be instructionally implemented ("doable")
- Collect data that accurately measure student progress for reporting to parents and for the development of present levels of performance for writing the next set of goals, objectives and benchmarks, among others.
Writing Goals, Objectives and Benchmarks: Data Based, Student Focused and Aligned with Standards Coaching- (One day)
These are follow-up up workshops with LEA participants to address strengths and challenges experienced during of implementation of the Writing of Goals, Objectives and Benchmarks. Discussions and recommendations by consultants and participants will comprise much of the day. Additionally, a sharing of successful strategies will take place to expand participants’ toolbox of skills, culminating with the development of a district/individual plan of action.
Participants will leave with:
- An expanded set of skills to deal with the planned, the known and the unexpected
- Increased comfort level with using data and making related IEP decisions
- Increased application of skills into daily work with IEP teams
- Increased skills in self-assessment of using data and applying to the writing of PLAAFP, Writing Goals, Objectives and Benchmarks as part of an ongoing self-improvement.
The school district will observe:
- Increased use of various types of student data in IEP development and decision making
- Increased opportunities for students to take part in the general education curriculum
- Increased instruction and student progress made on state standards
- Fewer conflicts due to agreed-upon IEP decisions and expectations for student learning
- An increase in student achievement
